Chicago-based new music groups Fonema Consort and Ursa Ensemble will join forces to introduce the music of Cassandra Miller to the city’s contemporary music followers. Her "Bel canto" for two separate chamber groups will be the highlight of this program. Exploring the transformations of iconic opera star Maria Callas' voice throughout her career, Miller’s piece can be interpreted as a portrait work of “La Divina” as she was often referred to during her times. Bel canto was the receiver of the Jules-Léger Prize for New Chamber Music in 2011, Canada’s highest honour for composition.

Fonema and Ursa will also performed sets of their own including a rare String Trio from 1925 by often overlooked impressionist French composer Jean Cras (Ursa Ensemble), and three vocal chamber works of varied poetic outlooks by Mexican Iván Sparrow, Chicago’s own Juan Campoverde and a world premiere by Fonema’s own Nina Dante (Fonema Consort).
