Gerard Pesson - Ambre Nous Resterons (2007)
Jonathan Hannau - Etude (2018)
Olga Neuwirth - Marsyas (2003/2004)

Jonathan Hannau is a Chicago-based composer and pianist interested in the surreal, abstract, and colorful possibilities of music. As a composer he actively embraces and explores the concepts of narrative, drama, and stark expression while pushing them down the rabbit hole of timbre. As a performer he tackles a variety of styles and ideas collaborating closely with composers to bring their works to life in his Rocking Chair Series. In this program, Jonathan focuses on Craig Davis Pinson's Are You There? commissioned back in 2016. The piece is dense with complex rhythms, allowing melodic fragments to burst forth from these scintillating textures. Jonathan curated a set of other works that draws from this idea of texture bringing forth melody. Gerard Pesson's Ambre Nous Resterons, based on Los Ombres errantesEtude is a winding study laced with complex rhythms and ever-moving voices highlighting a fragile melody. Finishing the program is Olga Neuwirth's Marsyas. This is a dense and chaotic work telling the story of the satyr Marsyas who unwisely challenged the lyre-playing Greek god Apollo to a musical contest and eventually payed for it with his life. Jonathan is very excited to be back at Constellation sharing the bill with the group Aether Eos.

"Jonathan is a distinctly modern presence in the Chicago (and international) music scene."

Aether Eos
Aether Eos is:

Leah Asher, violin
Christopher Goddard, piano

Rebecca Saunders (b. 1967) --- Duo (1996, revised. 99)
Leah Asher (b. 1986) --- Solo (2018)
Eric Wubbels (b. 1980)--- the children of fire come looking for fire (2012)
At the heart of this program is Eric Wubbels' monumental work the children of fire come looking for fire. This piece is drawn from the composer’s ongoing project, Duos with Piano, currently encompassing eight works written for different instruments paired with piano. These pieces “aim to develop a 21st-century conception of ensemble virtuosity”: they explore a range of “hyper-detailed timbral interplay”, “grinding noise and extended repetition” and “psychoacoustic mindfuckery”. Rebecca Saunders' 'Duo' comes from a place of similar intensity through obsessive repetition and pitch play. Leah Asher will take a solo interlude of composed improvisations based on her album, Retreat into Afters.
