Gregory Oakes
Clarinetist Gregory Oakes is a passionate champion of the music of our time, particularly things that expand listeners’ expectations. The pieces on this program reflect his enthusiasm for collaborating with composers: four of the works were written for him with two being world premieres. There is a common thread of exploration of sound that unifies all of these pieces. The composers extend the traditional sounds of the clarinet in ways that show equal parts curiosity and innovation. In celebration of Helmut Lachenmann’s experimental solo clarinet piece “Dal Niente” (the oldest piece on the program), each of these pieces delves into an aspect of making sounds on the instrument as though it were a new creature. Mr. Oakes has performed concerts of adventurous music throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America in venues including MaerzMusik (Berlin), De IJsbreker (Amsterdam), MUPA Performing Arts Festival (Thailand), and Carnegie Hall.

"Gregory Oakes obviously has a formidable technical armamentarium at his command, and the laudable curiosity to extend his repertory… and ours as well."

–Fanfare Magazine

“Today I found the time and calm for listening to your marvelous performance of my 'Dal Niente.' You are a great musician. This is not an easy piece. I myself always had problems with it, but now having heard your interpretation, I love it again (there is no better compliment). Now the piece has almost 50 years—but you made it totally fresh. Anyway, this is one of the best recordings—I think because of your incredible technique to change the articulation, and this has to do with a wonderful sense for the different sound (and noise) qualities. And—after all—it has to do with sensitivity and intelligence. Thank you so much.”
