Après L’Histoire introduced itself to Chicago audiences last year with staged performances of Igor Stravinsky & C.F. Ramuz’s "L’Histoire du soldat" at The Poetry Foundation, The Arts Club of Chicago, and Northwestern University. To reflect on the centennial anniversary of "L’Histoire du soldat," Après L’Histoire embarked on a “Centennial Commissioning Project,” seeking to create and perform new theatrical works that would add new perspective to the performances and conversations that have stemmed from "L’Histoire du soldat." On April 14 at Constellation, Après L’Histoire will premiere new compositions by composers Sarah Westwood (UK) and Manel Ribera Torres (Spain), winners of a competitive call-for-proposals process. Where Stravinsky and Ramuz’s original creation suggests a stark view of the world in the aftermath of the Great War, new works on the April 14 program are equally interested in the exploration of selfhood, but do so in more complex and multi-faceted settings. The concert will round out with Eliza Brown’s "Thirteen Trees" (commissioned in 2018) and instrumental miniatures composed by Ted Hearne in response to "L’Histoire du soldat." With their addition of three new theatrical works for "L’Histoire" performers, Après L’Histoire will add breadth to the conversation, exploring themes of sustainability, environmentalism, sexuality, and love in the face of despair.
