Hamid Drake
For nearly five decades percussionist Hamid Drake has been one of the most vital, creative, and spiritual musicians to call Chicago home. The Louisiana native was a founding member of the influential Mandingo Griot Society, where he forged a long-term relationship with trumpeter Don Cherry. Over the years Drake has maintained prolific and deep partnerships with musicians such as Peter Brötzmann, William Parker, Michael Zerang, and Fred Anderson, but one of his greatest strengths has been his openness to form new musical bonds. Tonight Drake gives a rare solo performance.

“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” - Confucius

beyond this point
beyond this point presents a set of works exploring the ritualistic, contemplative, and sometimes quirky worlds of minimalist percussion. Each piece in the program seeks to investigate the diversity, prospective, and performance practice found within miniature percussion instruments while highlighting their unique and innately beautiful sonic capabilities. The program includes music by Juri Seo, Alexandre Lunsqui, and Seung-Won Oh.
