Jazz Occurrence No. 13
Jazz Occurrence No. 13
Into it’s fifth year in Chicago, the Jazz Occurrence project has been stepping toward the high/lofting and necessary goals of Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk;
an all-arts inclusive human experience disguised as a concert with live painting.
Artist Lewis Achenbach has invited a posse of the great musicians and composers/experimenters accessible in this windy town to ‘skydive’ through time into the unknowable waters of improvisation/spontaneous creation. The artists will be exploring the concept of “Sonido Sólido”; imagining the room filling up and then releasing solid sound.

Ari Brown on saxophone, Katie Ernst on upright bass, Greg Ward on saxophone, Matt Piet on piano, Dalia Chin on flute, Harrison Bankhead on bass and Mike Reed on drums. Lewis Achenbach will be improvising on visual arts.
Special guests may be announced closer to the event.

A small run of the JAZZ OCCURRENCE COLORING BOOK (Achenbach’s 2nd published collection of art documents from live performances) will be released on the night.

“Lew has spent the last few years documenting Chicago’s jazz and avant-garde music in his unique, spontaneous, explosive painting style. He truly captures the essence and magic of improvised music, because he himself improvises in real-time with the musicians. He has spent the time to cultivate his voice and place in the music in the same way musicians do – by showing up and sitting in, studying the music and the players, week after week, for years. He understands our mission not just in words and sounds, but also in feelings, shapes and colors.”
