Walkabout Theater: The Brink!...

$10 - $20

In a cafe at the edge of the world, a group of wayward performers present The Brink! Or a Ritual of Bad Sounds, a cabaret of material collected from stories about home, journeys to the underworld, and cities on fire. Musical, muscular, irreverent, and full of wonder, The Brink!… responds to that moment when the ground beneath us shifts too quickly, and the world suddenly seems unrecognizable. Inspired by Pina Bausch’s Café Müller, the Broadway musical Cabaret, and Ann Carson’s The Gender of Sound, the ensemble slides past the edge of reason in this unfettered encounter with the stranger inside.

Walkabout Theater Company
Walkabout Theater Company
Walkabout Theater Company is a multidisciplinary ensemble of artists deeply committed to a unique practice of theater-making in Chicago. Walkabout produces three streams of programming: free outdoor phenomena focused on community engagement and unique artistic collaborations; world-premiere, touring performances created by the ensemble through our intensive laboratory practice; and performance training workshops investigating techniques of co-creation.

Walkabout’s site-specific work has included performances across Chicago in city parks, churches, public restrooms, laundromats, music clubs, and beaches. The company’s recent ensemble works have toured internationally and premiered in Chicago at the Steppenwolf Garage, Links Hall, and the Chicago Cultural Center. Walkabout has created international collaborations with support from the MacArthur Foundation’s International Connections Fund, the Network of Ensemble Theaters, and the National Performance Network.

Radically process-oriented, Walkabout is distinguished by a deep investment in the creation of each ensemble project, in the personal and artistic development of each ensemble artist, and in the cultural and artistic advancement of ensemble practice. Walkabout’s performances are acclaimed for their raw energy, physical daring, visceral imagery, and challenging narrative forms.
THE BRINK! OR NOBODY’S EVER KISSED ME LIKE THAT
THE BRINK! OR NOBODY’S EVER KISSED ME LIKE THAT
In a cafe at the edge of the world, a group of wayward performers present The Brink!, an experimental cabaret in a time of unraveling. Musical, muscular, irreverent, and full of wonder, The Brink!… responds to that moment when the ground beneath us shifts too quickly, and the world suddenly seems unrecognizable. Drawing from American pop songs and jazz standards, the poetry of Gertrude Stein, and Ann Carson’s “The Gender of Sound,” the ensemble slides past the edge of reason in this unfettered encounter with the stranger inside.

The Brink! is a National Performance Network/Visual Artists Network (NPN/VAN) Creation and Development Fund Project co-commissioned by Links Hall in partnership with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, VoxFest/Dartmouth College, the Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor Cricoteka, and NPN.
