Steve & Iqua Colson Band
The Continuum

Expect a set exploring solo piano, instrumental collaborations and select vocal selections as this band makes a rare Chicago appearance presenting original compositions from the house of Colson and Colson. With drummer Dushun Mosley (from the days with their popular Chicago band, The Unity Troupe), trombonist Norman Palm and bassist Harrison Bankhead's talents in the mix, this evening promises some stellar moments in improvised music….and yes a couple of the Colsons' greatest hits will be on the program. Adegoke Steve Colson is an award winning composer respected to the extent that his compositions have found their way into the repertoire of several fellow artists such as Oliver Lake, Hannibal, Richard Davis, Reggie Workman and the late, great pianist John Hicks. His recordings with notables including David Murray, Baikida Carroll, Butch Morris and Andrew Cyrille place him with an elite group of pianists. Iqua is an acclaimed vocalist and composer, recognized for her writing by Billboard magazine - her vocals frequently compared to Sarah Vaughan and Abbey Lincoln. Their international performances, Grammy nominated CD and handful of other prized albums let the listener know some of the reasons why they’ve been called one of the best-liked and influential couples in the arts. The late poet, writer and activist, Amiri Baraka, described their music this way - “a package that is as funky as it is cerebral, cool in its hotness, hot in its coolness, and always as thoughtful as the music need to be.” This will be an evening well spent for those Chicago music lovers who are ready to enjoy and stretch the tradition.

"This is music of serious intent that draws you in with the gaiety and swing and then hits you with more substance than you’d bargained for. Sharp ears, spot on improvisational acumen and impeccable musical intelligence are the order of the day." - Jazz Times
