Olivia Block
Olivia Block
Olivia Block creates original sound compositions utilizing a wide array of techniques and materials for concerts, site-specific multi-speaker installations, live cinema, and performance.

Her inside piano compositions are modular in structure, allowing room for spontaneous response to the acoustics of each instrument. Her performance techniques include creating controlled feedback with contact mics, playing microcassettes and moving glass and metal pieces on the wood and strings of the instrument. These techniques draw out the resonant tones and material qualities of the piano. The tones and textures then guide her choices during the performance.

Block has performed in festivals and tours throughout Europe, America and Japan for twenty years. She has been interviewed in several publications including NPR’s Morning Edition, The Wire, Music Works, Blow Up, The Chicago Reader, and Pitchfork’s Outdoor, among others.

Her piano performance at Constellation is the CD release event for her untitled piano and organ suite, out now on Another Timbre.

Adam Sonderberg (Haptic), co-producer of the recording, will accompany Olivia on organ.

“Finely nuanced textures of environmental material and occasional surges of sonic power blended with an elegant instrumental architecture.”- Julian Cowley, The Wire magazine

With the precision and flexibility of modern chamber musicians, Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble specializes in experimental repertoire that is changing the paradigm of contemporary vocal music. Described as “a new force of vocal excellence and innovation” by The Brooklyn Rail, Quince continually pushes the boundaries of traditional vocal ensemble literature. On the heels of the group’s second album Hushers (New Focus), Elizabeth Pearse (soprano), Kayleigh Butcher (mezzo soprano), Amanda DeBoer Bartlett (soprano), and Carrie Henneman Shaw (soprano) present a dynamic program featuring music by Luis Amaya, Kate Soper, Daniel Dehaan, Fjòla Evans, Travis Weller, Gilda Lyons, Richardo Zohn-Muldoon, and a new collaborative work with Olivia Block. Mocrep cellist Alex Ellsworth will join the ensemble for two pieces.
