Closed Casket: The Complete, Final and Absolutely Last Baudelaire in a Box
Dubbed “an act of extravagant artistic idiosyncrasy” by the Chicago Reader, Baudelaire in a Box is a cantastoria cycle based on Charles Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du mal. The show is the brainchild of Theater Oobleck founder Dave Buchen, who designs, builds, and illustrates the mounted scrolls called "crankies" which serve as the visual component of this multimedia experience. The illustrated scrolls accompany original songs written from Baudelaire's poems by composers and songwriters from Chicago and beyond. Over eight years the project has created 101 songs based on unique poems, composed by 25 different songwriters and performed at venues in Chicago, New York City, Connecticut, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.

Episode 9, "Unquenched,” features 14 new poems translated and set to music by Reid Coker, David Costanza, Jeff Dorchen, Annie Higgins, Angela James, Ronnie Kuller, Abraham Levitan, Mickle Maher, Mark Messing, Chris Schoen, and Joey Spilberg. The songs will be performed by an all-star band featuring Schoen, Spielberg, James, and Kuller along with Emmy Bean, T-Roy Martin, and Dave Smith – and accompanied by a new set of crankies designed and illustrated by Dave Buchen.
Theater Oobleck
Theater Oobleck
Theater Oobleck is an artistic collective dedicated to producing and performing original works of theater for the benefit of, and at low or no cost to, the members of the Chicago community and beyond. All our works are created and developed by members of the Oobleck ensemble, working in concert to create a collaborative vision without an overseeing director. We have produced about seventy world-premiere productions over the past twenty-seven years, as well as eighteen remounts of earlier productions.
Day Three: Episode X
We close our Baudelaire festival with one last episode of 32 brand new, never-before-heard-or-seen songs and crankies, all never to be performed again: EPISODE X!

This episode features work by many of the same artists who contributed songs to Episodes 1 through 9, like New Town Drunks, Kate Douglas, Lea Tshilds, Addie Horan, Lizbeth Román, T-Roy Martin, Annie Higgins, Angela James, Reid Coker, Julie Pomerleau, and Chris Schoen.

But the evening will also feature work by composers contributing their first works for the project, including Jim Becker, Jim Cooper, Jeff Kowalkowski, Andrea Jablonski, Lloyd Brodnax King, Matthew Shepherd, and Oobleck regulars Martha Bayne and Colm O’Reilly. Curated by Chris Schoen.
