OpenICE: Peter Evans+Levy Lorenzo | 100 Not-Songs for JOHN CAGE
OpenICE: Peter Evans+Levy Lorenzo | 100 Not-Songs for JOHN CAGE
The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and OpenICE present two projects in one concert featuring work created by its members. Tony Arnold (voice) and Fredrick Gifford (composer) collaborate with projection designer Ross Karre to create a new version of Gifford's 100 Not-Songs for JOHN CAGE. The work is grounded in Cage's own score for “A Dip in the Lake”, a piece superimposed upon the map of Chicago itself. Using chance methods, Gifford extracted 100 locations from Cage's score and charted a new journey to film selections of the 100 not-songs. Following intermission, Levy Lorenzo and Peter Evans will bring their hyper-charged inventions to Constellation to complete this double bill of contrasting sonic experiences. Lorenzo and Evans began performing duo as part of the International Contemporary Ensemble's OpenICE commissioning series in early 2016. Their music is an otherworldly blur of dense rhythmic frameworks, elaborate notated pieces, open improvisation and weird drones. Lorenzo's complex of self-built instruments, gongs, dry percussion, laptop and sound processing engage with Evans' acoustic trumpet in a dialogue of noise, mystery, precision and chaos.
